California Teacher Certification: What You Need to Know

Making the choice to obtain a California teacher certification is becoming extremely popular as more students look to the field of teaching for their future career path. Most students are working toward completing a multiple subject track, which allows them to teach at the elementary school level once they obtain their California teacher certification. California and teacher certification are known across the country, as teachers in the state have one of the highest average salaries. In general there are a variety of requirements that one must complete if they want to be able to obtain teacher certification, in order to begin teaching.

California Teaching Certification Requirements

The first requirement that one must fulfill to obtain their California teacher certification, is the completion of a bachelors degree. In addition, they must also satisfy the basic skills requirements and finish a teacher preparation program. Obtaining your California teacher certification will require you to prove subject matter competency as well as complete computer technology and English language skills courses. Those who want to teach at the elementary school level will also need to pass the RICA as part of their teaching requirements. Finally teaching candidates must complete courses on the US Constitution. If you want to teach high school or junior high, the requirements are similar, except you need to obtain a single subject credential and do not have to pass the RICA.

If a student is able to complete all of the requirements, then they can get their preliminary credential, and will then have California teacher certification so that they can begin teaching in the state. However within the first five years, teachers need to take other courses to further their education so that they can get a clear credential. The time needed to complete all the requirements for most students is five years, which includes the completion of the bachelor's degree. Most students complete their single subject or multiple subject track of teacher preparation at the same school in which they complete their bachelor's degree, but this is not required.
