The University of California, Santa Barbara was in the news recently as the county officials put a stop to a massive party dubbed Floatopia. Once canceled the students of UCSB took to the streets of nearby town Isla Vista, which is almost 100% students, in a new party dubbed Del-topia. This party attitude might be one of the reasons why Playboy picked USCB as the number 8 party school, on the Top 10 Schools, 2010 Playboy Party schools. (more…)

Floatopia Converted Into Del-topia Near UCSB
Monday, April 12th, 2010The 2010 Floatopia party near UCSB was canceled this year, as county officials stopped it from happening since the student organizers did not have an event permit. Roughly 12,000 people came to Floatopia 2009, and crowds were expected to be even bigger this year which is what worried the Santa Barbara County officials. When this many people descend upon the beach at once, it causes massive devastation to the natural habitat. There are not enough bathroom facilities to accommodate the UCSB students for Floatopia, nor are there the proper security to make sure people stay safe. (more…)

Will 2010 Mark the End of Floatopia Near UCSB?
Thursday, April 8th, 2010It started in 2004 with some UCSB students who organized Floatopia, which is a local social event on the beach near the California university, where people come together to party and float down the beach. The first few years the event was quite mellow, but in 2008 things started to gain momentum with more people attending and 2009 was even bigger. The 2009 event was so popular with roughly 12,000 people, that there was a rally to have Floatopia 2, but there were a number of circumstances that caused the event not to occur. Santa Barbara County officials were worried about this massive event set to take place this week, as they feel it is a safety issue because so many people descended upon this small beach. (more…)
