California State University and University of California systems have been struggling the last couple years to offer enough classes to all of the students who want to enroll. The current budget crisis in California, and lack of concentrated efforts on funding the California’s public university systems for the past couple decades, have hindered the universities’ ability to accept as many students as they would like. However the nonprofit Public Policy Institute of California released a report which recommended the state make changes to the current admission guidelines for the California State University and University of California systems. Thursday, March 25th, 2010We are only a few months into 2010 and there have already been various racist incidents at University of California campuses. Schools like UC San Diego, UC Davis, and UC Santa Cruz have all had recent incidents that have upset many students and residents of the area. This is why officials of the UC system got together yesterday to discuss ways to improve race relations across all of campus locations. California Colleges Prepare for Upcoming Protests
Monday, March 1st, 2010There were a number of protests last fall throughout the University of California campuses, as thousands of people came out to show their frustration with the budget cuts and fee increases. Later this week, on March 4th, there will be even more activism as the California community colleges and Cal State campuses have joined to show their support. Not only will these protests and events happen in California, but there are similar events in a number of other states. Students are not happy with rising fees, while classes are being cut making it tougher to graduate, thus forcing them to stay at college longer and pay even more money. UC Berkeley, which is known for their political activism, already showed signs of support by throwing a party last week to promote the March 4th event. (more…)
UC Berkeley Research Shows Benefits of Naps
Friday, February 26th, 2010Napping is very popular in other parts of the world, specifically in Latin America and Spain where siestas are extremely common. In the United States we tend to go non stop, and if anything sleep less than most experts recommend. Recently released research from UC Berkeley indicates how beneficial a midday nap can be to brain, as it gives it time to rest so that it can be ready to absorb new information when you awake. Some students may think that they can just stay up all night and study, but preventing your body from sleep is actually hindering your ability to retain the information which you are studying. Friday, February 19th, 2010Fraternities from the University of California system are frequently in the news for their good and bad activities, but lately most of the press they have been receiving has been negative. A recent party held by UC San Diego fraternity students mocked Black History Month, and many students and administrators are upset. The Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, also know as PIKE, was pointed to as the organizers of this party, but in fact it was not an official event from PIKE. There were students who were part of PIKE and other fraternities who were involved with the posting of it on Facebook. (more…)

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010Advocates for the University of California are extremely upset and want to see lawmakers make education a bigger priority when it comes to the budget of the state. This unrest has led to a rally by the UC student association. A big part of the demonstration will focus on the fee hikes that continue, yet classes are being cut making it tougher to graduate on time. ‘Student Protection Act’ Introduced for CSU and UC School Systems
Monday, February 1st, 2010Last week, California State Senator Jeff Denham, R-Merced, introduced the “Student Protection Act,” at Fresno State University and UC Merced. This act would require schools in the University of California and California State University systems to have a 180-day waiting period between when a tuition or fee increase is approved, and when it goes into effect. It also looks to limit fee increases to no more than 10% per year, which would be a step to help curb the rapid increase which California colleges have experienced lately. (more…)
University of California Applications Hit Record Numbers
Friday, January 15th, 2010Fall 2010 is already looking to be extremely popular for students, as the University of California campuses are seeing a huge increase in transfer student applications. This sudden increase has caused the overall applications numbers in California to be at their highest level ever. It may seem odd that applications are up in a time when colleges in the UC system have had to increase fees because of budget troubles in California. People see the value in education and most feel it is the best way to prepare oneself to be successful during an economic recession. In total 134,029 students sent in applications to UC schools in the application period which recently ended at the close of November. (more…)
