Sustainable development is becoming increasingly popular, as people and businesses look to decrease their environmental impact to help improve conditions around the world. In order to help this movement, the MacArthur Foundation is donating a total of $5.6 million to 10 universities to establish master’s degree programs in sustainable development. Among those universities selected are California colleges UC Berkeley and UC Davis who will both receive a portion of the $5.6 million grant. (more…)

Friday, April 23rd, 2010UC Davis is not traditionally known for being a big party school, and is rarely in the news for things getting out of control with California college students in and around campus. However over the past few years their annual university open house called Picnic Day got a bit chaotic. Picnic Day has been going on at UC Davis for 96 years, but after major increases in violence and arrests this year, it may be the end of the event. This year had 33 arrests, which was over double what was seen in the past couple years, and the event required a lot more police to handle the crowds. (more…)
Hyatt Place UC Davis is a Campus First
Wednesday, March 24th, 2010Many California colleges have hotels near campus, but not many have an actual hotel on campus for people to utilize when visiting. UC Davis is making the news as it debuts the first ever hotel to be located on campus grounds. The Hyatt Place UC Davis, is the start of a new standard of hotels for the Hyatt Chain, as they partnered with the college to provide a great hotel experience to the guests. (more…)
UC Davis Student Pushing to Make Hella a Real Science Term
Thursday, March 11th, 2010Kids in California started using the word hella back in the early 1990’s, and now physics student Austin Sendek from UC Davis is working to make it an official prefix with the International System of Units (SI). This is the system that defines prefixes like mega, kilo, or even yotta which is for 10^24 which is the highest measurement as of now. However Sendek wants to change this and get the SI to make hella the new prefix for 10^27. In slang terms hella does not indicate a specific amount, but more so generically is used to refer to a hell of a lot of something. (more…)
UC Berkeley Starts Quidditch League For Harry Potter Fanatics
Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010The sport of Quidditch first became known to the world in 1997 when British author J.K. Rowling released the first Harry Potter fantasy novel. She developed the sport specifically for the series of books, and it is featured in all but the last book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. In 2005, students at Middlebury College in Vermont turned the fictional sport into a intramural league, then in 2007 Alex Benepe founded the Intercollegiate Quidditch Association which now has over 200 institutions participating. UC Davis Students Develop iPhone App for the Students
Monday, February 8th, 2010Seniors Fei Li and Sunny Dhillon took a class in the fall quarter of 2009 which was taught by guest lecturer Serban Porumbescu of Tapulous and professor of computer science at UC Davis. This class gave them the knowledge needed to develop an iPhone application designed for the students of UC Davis called UCD Mobile, which puts UC Davis into the palm of any student’s hand. (more…)
UC Davis Led Mini E Study Showing Positive Results
Tuesday, January 26th, 2010Initial results were announced today from a study being led at the University of California-Davis involving BMW Mini E electric vehicles and their consumers, by Dr. Thomas Turrentine. The ongoing study is attempting to acquire real world data around how consumers use the vehicles on a daily basis by tracking 450 users in Los Angeles and New York. The consumers are continually tracking all of their information in a log book allowing the researchers to analyze the data. Consumers are currently about halfway through their one year lease period, which is the duration of the study. (more…)
