The California State University system has been working to diversify, as enrollment has dropped among many minority groups across CSU campuses. They have been working to educate and recruit more African American students to CSU campuses via the CSU Super Sunday program, and now look to work on increasing Latino enrollment with the “Es El Momento” campaign. The Moment is Now campaign is a three year plan to increase exposure to college among Latinos in the U.S., so that more students complete high school and move onto a California college. This campaign makes sense in California where Latinos are by far the fastest growing minority, so it is critical that they stay educated so that they can help contribute to the work force. (more…)

CSU Campaign Looks to Increase Latino Enrollment
Tuesday, March 9th, 2010Career Colleges Benefiting From Crisis at California Colleges
Friday, March 5th, 2010Many students in California are thankful that they have career colleges as an option, since so many colleges and universities in the state are having budget issues. The lack of funding to California colleges and universities has created a reduction in the number of students these schools can accommodate. There are also wait lists at many universities and colleges in California, which are complicating matters as students just want to become accepted so they can further their education. This is why career colleges in California like Kaplan University and Ashford University are working with community college students, who are having trouble completing their degrees or transferring to a bachelors degree program. Wait Lists Will Reduce UC and CSU Enrollment
Thursday, March 4th, 2010Not only are wait lists at CSU and UC campuses controlling student enrollment while they deal with budget issues, but they also continue to frustrate students and send them away to other colleges or universities. High school seniors in California are applying to numerous UC or CSU schools, but unfortunately many are being put on the wait lists. Being placed on a wait list does not give an incoming freshmen any reassurance that they will get into the college, in fact many are choosing to just go to the first school that accepts them instead of waiting. Therefore, shunning the wait lists, students are going elsewhere in California, or perhaps out of state, which does not help the budget issues in the state. (more…)
Expect Fewer Students at California Community Colleges
Thursday, February 25th, 2010The rough economy has definitely not stopped the demand in the market for people to attend a California college, if anything the recession has a counter cyclical effect causing even more people to seek out a higher education. Budgets in the UC, CSU, and California community college system have made it very difficult for everyone to get into school as they had planned. Recently state Chancellor Jack Scott said that California community colleges will educate roughly 21,000 fewer students in comparison to the prior year. As the funding has been reduced, the budget issues have caught up with the the community college system making it impossible to accommodate the number of people who want to enroll. (more…)
California State Universities Look to Improve Black Student Enrollment
Monday, February 22nd, 2010Over the past five years, officials from the California State University have been working on increasing the enrollment rates of African American students via the CSU Super Sunday program. This initiative was created so that they could inform black communities in California about how to best plan, prepare, and apply for college. The program started out small, but it has grown very quickly with CSU officials now visiting 100 churches in black communities across 40 cities in the state. Enrollments are up over 75% over the 2004-2008 period, which is a positive sign for the program and for diversity at CSU college campuses. (more…)
California State University System Urges Super Seniors to Graduate
Thursday, February 18th, 2010The California State University system is being forced to become more efficient with their budget, as they do not have enough money to offer enough classes to meet the student demand. Cutting classes is not enough, as there are a small minority of “super seniors” who are taking up space in classes which they do not need. Many times, when a student transfers from another California college, they have credits from classes which do not count towards their degree. Often, students take the incorrect classes because of poor planning, and other times they switch majors which makes many of their credits irrelevant. In order to push these super seniors along who have been trying to graduate for more than 5 years, the California State University system will work with students to get them on a plan to graduate. Students Seeking California Degrees Struggle with 2010-2011 Fee Increases
Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010There are thousands of students in California at a CSU or UC college working to earn their degree, but the new fall 2010-2011 tuition increases might be too much for some to handle. It is extremely important for recent graduates of high school in the state, to move onto college and earn a California degree. However the undergraduate fees have made it increasingly difficult for students to enroll in college, or complete their degree. (more…)
‘Student Protection Act’ Introduced for CSU and UC School Systems
Monday, February 1st, 2010Last week, California State Senator Jeff Denham, R-Merced, introduced the “Student Protection Act,” at Fresno State University and UC Merced. This act would require schools in the University of California and California State University systems to have a 180-day waiting period between when a tuition or fee increase is approved, and when it goes into effect. It also looks to limit fee increases to no more than 10% per year, which would be a step to help curb the rapid increase which California colleges have experienced lately. (more…)
