Not only are wait lists at CSU and UC campuses controlling student enrollment while they deal with budget issues, but they also continue to frustrate students and send them away to other colleges or universities. High school seniors in California are applying to numerous UC or CSU schools, but unfortunately many are being put on the wait lists. Being placed on a wait list does not give an incoming freshmen any reassurance that they will get into the college, in fact many are choosing to just go to the first school that accepts them instead of waiting. Therefore, shunning the wait lists, students are going elsewhere in California, or perhaps out of state, which does not help the budget issues in the state. (more…)

Wait Lists Will Reduce UC and CSU Enrollment
Thursday, March 4th, 2010UC Riverside Joins Zipcar Movement in California
Wednesday, February 24th, 2010The University of California, Riverside is now the 17th college in the state which is using the car sharing service, Zipcar, to help reduce the need for on campus parking. California is a big state and there is a lot to do which means that students living on campus like to have a car so they can partake in things outside of school or the city. Often time students move to a UC or CSU college from other parts of the state or even outside California, leaving their cars behind. (more…)
California State University System Urges Super Seniors to Graduate
Thursday, February 18th, 2010The California State University system is being forced to become more efficient with their budget, as they do not have enough money to offer enough classes to meet the student demand. Cutting classes is not enough, as there are a small minority of “super seniors” who are taking up space in classes which they do not need. Many times, when a student transfers from another California college, they have credits from classes which do not count towards their degree. Often, students take the incorrect classes because of poor planning, and other times they switch majors which makes many of their credits irrelevant. In order to push these super seniors along who have been trying to graduate for more than 5 years, the California State University system will work with students to get them on a plan to graduate. Budget Cuts Will Hurt CSUB for 2010-2011 School Year
Monday, February 15th, 2010California colleges have been struggling with budget cuts for the past couple years and 2010-2011 looks to be another rough year for the CSU and UC schools in the state. President Horace Mitchell of California State University, Bakersfield announced last week a budget plan which will include raising student fees, cutting staff, and canceling winter quarter graduation ceremonies. The plan would also cut four sports programs as well for the 2010-2011 school year at CSUB. Another rough part to these budget cuts is that it will force many classes to go from average class sizes of 35 to 70 students. (more…)

Monday, February 8th, 2010Seniors Fei Li and Sunny Dhillon took a class in the fall quarter of 2009 which was taught by guest lecturer Serban Porumbescu of Tapulous and professor of computer science at UC Davis. This class gave them the knowledge needed to develop an iPhone application designed for the students of UC Davis called UCD Mobile, which puts UC Davis into the palm of any student’s hand. (more…)
California Community Colleges Top Focus at State Legislators Hearing
Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010A California state legislator hearing was held in Sacramento yesterday regarding the California Master Plan for Higher Education. The overall focus of the hearing was to brain storm ideas on how more students can get into college and graduate faster. One idea that came up last month in the state, was to allow California community colleges the ability to offer bachelors degrees for certain subjects. (more…)
Students Seeking California Degrees Struggle with 2010-2011 Fee Increases
Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010There are thousands of students in California at a CSU or UC college working to earn their degree, but the new fall 2010-2011 tuition increases might be too much for some to handle. It is extremely important for recent graduates of high school in the state, to move onto college and earn a California degree. However the undergraduate fees have made it increasingly difficult for students to enroll in college, or complete their degree. (more…)
Study Suggest Better Coordination Needed Between California Colleges
Friday, January 29th, 2010California is a very large state in terms of population, and therefore the volume of students and number of colleges can make it challenging to work as a cohesive force. There are dozens of community colleges through the state in addition to the CSU and UC system colleges, providing students with a higher education. Economic troubles and budget cutbacks over the past few years have made it tough for California colleges to stay operating at an optimal level, which has forced the three college systems to scramble, making plans to survive. Without a unifying framework there is no way for the community college, CSU, and UC systems to operate in a way that will be optimal for all schools and the students. (more…)
UC San Diego Looks to Establish Law School
Thursday, January 28th, 2010A joint committee has been formed between UC San Diego and the California Western School of Law, to investigate ways in which they could partner together to form a law school at UCSD. Last fall UC Irvine launched the fifth law school in the University of California system, but outside of that there have not been many new law schools in the state. The formation of a UC San Diego School of Law could be a huge gain for students in the region looking to pursue a law degree. However the big challenge at hand is trying to get this law school up and running in a way that is self-supporting, which does not require any money from the state, or UC San Diego funds. (more…)
California State University Working to Improve Graduation Rates
Wednesday, January 27th, 2010The California State University system is currently working on plans that would raise the graduation rate by 8% over the next 6 years. Despite drastic budget cuts through the state, the CSU system looks to push forward and take control of the their students graduating. No longer will it be only the students to blame, as the CSU system looks for ways to improve graduation rates, without touching the budget. While nothing is final yet, an example given by Cal State University Chancellor Charles B. Reed was that, “There are simple things we can do, like having faculty take class attendance and if a student misses a second or third time, call or e-mail to find out why and get on it before they get so far behind, get a failing grade and give up hope”.
