Students are still upset about the news last week from the California State University Board of Trustees, where they voted 10-2 for an increase in student fees by 5 percent. The continued cuts in the California state budget have forced the CSU system to raise fees to try and compensate for the loss of funding. This increase will set fees and tuition for in-state undergrads at $4,230 per year and graduate students at $5,214 a year. In addition Teacher Credential student fees will also increase by 5 percent which puts tuition at $4,908 per year. Previous increases, combined with this 5 percent bump could cause even more students to shy away from a CSU and attend another California college, or go out of state. (more…)

CSU Fee Increases Likely to Decrease Enrollment
Wednesday, June 30th, 2010California State University System Helps Fuel Economy
Thursday, May 13th, 2010The economy in California has been struggling over the past few years, and this trend has hurt the funding of the California State University system. This may not mean much on the surface, but if California wants to recover they need to take the importance of the CSU system into account. A recent report released by the CSU system entitled, “Working for California: The Impact of the California State University System,” goes into depth on how much economic activity the system helps generate. Overall the 23-campus CSU system reported that they generate approximately $17 billion in economic activity for the state, which results in roughly $1 billion in local and state taxes each year. California State University Faculty Salary Increases on Hold
Friday, May 7th, 2010In 2007 there was a collective bargaining agreement with the California State University system, and part of that involved salary increases for faculty members. However those salary increases are on hold as of now, after a neutral fact-finding team concluded that the salary increases cannot be justified at this time due to the ongoing economic crisis. CSU has had their general fund cut by roughly 20% over the last two years, which has hindered their universities’ ability to operate efficiently and make students, faculty, and administrators all happy. This news is compounded with numerous other events that have hurt CSU schools, like the reduction of classes, cancellation of sports programs, and meeting student demand for enrollment. (more…)
California Community College Students Having Difficulty Transferring
Thursday, April 29th, 2010Students are definitely excited that Governor Schwarzenegger is pushing for more money for financial aid and higher education, during the upcoming fiscal year in California that starts in July. However this does not help current California community college students who are trying to push forward to transfer and complete their bachelors degree that are having tremendous difficulty. Right now there is a major bottleneck with the flow of transfer students to the California State University system, who are currently not accepting midyear transfer students. (more…)
Report Recommends California Universities Should Increase Enrollments
Friday, April 23rd, 2010California State University and University of California systems have been struggling the last couple years to offer enough classes to all of the students who want to enroll. The current budget crisis in California, and lack of concentrated efforts on funding the California’s public university systems for the past couple decades, have hindered the universities’ ability to accept as many students as they would like. However the nonprofit Public Policy Institute of California released a report which recommended the state make changes to the current admission guidelines for the California State University and University of California systems. California State University and AT&T Partner for College Bus Tour
Tuesday, April 13th, 2010AT&T and the California State University system have teamed up for the Road to College Bus Tour to help educate middle and high school students on how to prepare for college. This will be the second time that the CSU system and AT&T have partnered up for this bus tour, and the 2010 tour is the biggest yet. This tour possible because of a $500,000 donation from AT&T, and the money will go a long way to show the students of California how they can create a path to college. The Road to College Bus Tour started in Imperial Valley yesterday, and will continue on to 23 more cities across California over the next month. (more…)
Coed Dorms Increasing in Popularity at California Colleges
Friday, March 19th, 2010Coed Dorms or gender-neutral housing has been becoming increasingly popular among California colleges, and schools through the United States. Some of the California colleges that are already accepting this housing option include Stanford, UC Berkley, UC Riverside, and the Harvey Mudd colleges. There are roughly 50 colleges and universities across the U.S. which are using coed dorms, but this number is expected to increase in the next few years. It seems only logical that more California colleges and universities would consider this as a way to gain them more flexibility when it comes to housing. (more…)
Wait Lists Will Reduce UC and CSU Enrollment
Thursday, March 4th, 2010Not only are wait lists at CSU and UC campuses controlling student enrollment while they deal with budget issues, but they also continue to frustrate students and send them away to other colleges or universities. High school seniors in California are applying to numerous UC or CSU schools, but unfortunately many are being put on the wait lists. Being placed on a wait list does not give an incoming freshmen any reassurance that they will get into the college, in fact many are choosing to just go to the first school that accepts them instead of waiting. Therefore, shunning the wait lists, students are going elsewhere in California, or perhaps out of state, which does not help the budget issues in the state. (more…)
California State Universities Look to Improve Black Student Enrollment
Monday, February 22nd, 2010Over the past five years, officials from the California State University have been working on increasing the enrollment rates of African American students via the CSU Super Sunday program. This initiative was created so that they could inform black communities in California about how to best plan, prepare, and apply for college. The program started out small, but it has grown very quickly with CSU officials now visiting 100 churches in black communities across 40 cities in the state. Enrollments are up over 75% over the 2004-2008 period, which is a positive sign for the program and for diversity at CSU college campuses. (more…)
Budget Cuts Will Hurt CSUB for 2010-2011 School Year
Monday, February 15th, 2010California colleges have been struggling with budget cuts for the past couple years and 2010-2011 looks to be another rough year for the CSU and UC schools in the state. President Horace Mitchell of California State University, Bakersfield announced last week a budget plan which will include raising student fees, cutting staff, and canceling winter quarter graduation ceremonies. The plan would also cut four sports programs as well for the 2010-2011 school year at CSUB. Another rough part to these budget cuts is that it will force many classes to go from average class sizes of 35 to 70 students. (more…)
