26 California Schools Make Princeton Review’s Greenest Colleges

The Princeton Review recently released their Guide to 286 Green Colleges, in which California took 26 of the top spots on the list. 4/20 Celebrations Held at Various California Colleges
Wednesday, April 21st, 2010Not many of the California colleges have organized 4/20 celebrations, but schools like UC Santa Cruz and Humboldt State University are known to have meet ups for the day. These celebrations at colleges in California come at a time when people in the state are pushing to legalize marijuana. The events at HSU and UCSC are not secrets, as people flock to a central location in public to meet up and celebrate. Students at UCSC celebrated at Porter Meadow for their 4/20 celebration, and HSU students gathered at Redwood Park in Arcata. Only about a thousand people showed up at the UCSC event this year, as school officials tried to deter people from attending as it give the school bad press. (more…)
Students Still Frustrated With California College Waiting Lists
Tuesday, April 6th, 2010California colleges and universities decided to implement waiting lists this year so that they could better control the flood of students applying this year. A couple of the CSU schools like San Diego State and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo have used waiting lists for years, but now almost all of the California universities and colleges will put them to use. As a result various California colleges have had to reduce or cancel some of their summer school classes, which is very upsetting to students. Coed Dorms Increasing in Popularity at California Colleges
Friday, March 19th, 2010Coed Dorms or gender-neutral housing has been becoming increasingly popular among California colleges, and schools through the United States. Some of the California colleges that are already accepting this housing option include Stanford, UC Berkley, UC Riverside, and the Harvey Mudd colleges. There are roughly 50 colleges and universities across the U.S. which are using coed dorms, but this number is expected to increase in the next few years. California College Crisis Causing Students to Apply Out of State
Monday, March 15th, 2010As the California college crisis continues, more students are being forced to apply out of state to ensure that they get accepted into a campus which they want to attend. Right now many University of California and California State University schools are using waiting lists, and having to reduce classes to cope with the budget cuts over the last few years. Private and public colleges and universities outside of California are reporting a solid increase in applicants from our state, and this trend looks to continue until changes are made. Over the next 10 years there is expected to be a big increase in the number of additional students which the CSU and UC systems need to accommodate, and if they do not then we will lose talented students to out of state schools. CSU Campaign Looks to Increase Latino Enrollment
Tuesday, March 9th, 2010The California State University system has been working to diversify, as enrollment has dropped among many minority groups across CSU campuses. They have been working to educate and recruit more African American students to CSU campuses via the CSU Super Sunday program, and now look to work on increasing Latino enrollment with the “Es El Momento” campaign. The Moment is Now campaign is a three year plan to increase exposure to college among Latinos in the U.S., so that more students complete high school and move onto a California college. This campaign makes sense in California where Latinos are by far the fastest growing minority, so it is critical that they stay educated so that they can help contribute to the work force. (more…)
