Tuesday, June 15th, 2010Summer Session Canceled at City College of San Francisco
Friday, February 5th, 2010Budget cuts across the UC, CSU, and community college systems of California are causing numerous problems for the schools as they struggle to offer enough classes for students to graduate. There have already been a variety of classes being offered less often than expected, and when they are offered they might be full, which forces college students to wait until the next term. This scenario is even worse for students of City College of San Francisco, because the school decided to cancel their very popular summer session. The summer session at City College of San Francisco is typically a great time for students to catch up and take classes they could not attend during the normal school year. (more…)
‘Student Protection Act’ Introduced for CSU and UC School Systems
Monday, February 1st, 2010Last week, California State Senator Jeff Denham, R-Merced, introduced the “Student Protection Act,” at Fresno State University and UC Merced. This act would require schools in the University of California and California State University systems to have a 180-day waiting period between when a tuition or fee increase is approved, and when it goes into effect. It also looks to limit fee increases to no more than 10% per year, which would be a step to help curb the rapid increase which California colleges have experienced lately. (more…)
California State University Working to Improve Graduation Rates
Wednesday, January 27th, 2010The California State University system is currently working on plans that would raise the graduation rate by 8% over the next 6 years. Despite drastic budget cuts through the state, the CSU system looks to push forward and take control of the their students graduating. No longer will it be only the students to blame, as the CSU system looks for ways to improve graduation rates, without touching the budget. While nothing is final yet, an example given by Cal State University Chancellor Charles B. Reed was that, “There are simple things we can do, like having faculty take class attendance and if a student misses a second or third time, call or e-mail to find out why and get on it before they get so far behind, get a failing grade and give up hope”. UC Merced Set to Implement Massive Solar Installation
Friday, December 18th, 2009The University of California-Merced, which is the newest college in the UC system, has just announced that the financing they needed for a massive solar power project has been secured. Located right in the middle of the central California valley, Merced is sunny almost all year, which makes it a great choice to utilize solar power to help with the overall energy use of the school. Total cost of this project is expected to be around $100 million and will contribute roughly 20% of the total yearly energy consumption of the university. UC Merced plans to build a solar powered 1-megawatt system which should offset millions of pounds of carbon emissions over the next few decades, which is a big help for a state that has millions of cars on the road everyday polluting the air.
