As the California college crisis continues, more students are being forced to apply out of state to ensure that they get accepted into a campus which they want to attend. Right now many University of California and California State University schools are using waiting lists, and having to reduce classes to cope with the budget cuts over the last few years. Private and public colleges and universities outside of California are reporting a solid increase in applicants from our state, and this trend looks to continue until changes are made. Over the next 10 years there is expected to be a big increase in the number of additional students which the CSU and UC systems need to accommodate, and if they do not then we will lose talented students to out of state schools. California College Crisis Causing Students to Apply Out of State
Monday, March 15th, 2010California College Tuition Comparable to Other States
Wednesday, March 10th, 2010California college students have been very upset the last couple years as tuition and fees are on the rise, but at the same time classes are also being cut. Recently the California Postsecondary Education Commission reported that many California colleges and universities are still a good bargain, in comparison to other states. This data, showing that other colleges across the U.S. are comparably priced, is not helping the frustrations that many college students in California are feeling as they struggle to pay for classes and graduate on time. CSU Campaign Looks to Increase Latino Enrollment
Tuesday, March 9th, 2010The California State University system has been working to diversify, as enrollment has dropped among many minority groups across CSU campuses. They have been working to educate and recruit more African American students to CSU campuses via the CSU Super Sunday program, and now look to work on increasing Latino enrollment with the “Es El Momento” campaign. The Moment is Now campaign is a three year plan to increase exposure to college among Latinos in the U.S., so that more students complete high school and move onto a California college. This campaign makes sense in California where Latinos are by far the fastest growing minority, so it is critical that they stay educated so that they can help contribute to the work force. (more…)
Will Stanford Bring Back Their R.O.T.C. Program?
Monday, March 8th, 2010During the 1960’s there were thousands of California college students who were opposed to the Vietnam War, and there were lots of student protests against the R.O.T.C. at Stanford. In 1968 the war in Vietnam was at the a peak, and a few months after the Tet Offensive there was an incident at Stanford where the Navy R.O.T.C. building was set on fire by some arsonists. After this fire occurred, things started to go downhill for the R.O.T.C. at Stanford as the Faculty Senate determined that they would stop giving credit for the courses. (more…)
Career Colleges Benefiting From Crisis at California Colleges
Friday, March 5th, 2010Many students in California are thankful that they have career colleges as an option, since so many colleges and universities in the state are having budget issues. The lack of funding to California colleges and universities has created a reduction in the number of students these schools can accommodate. There are also wait lists at many universities and colleges in California, which are complicating matters as students just want to become accepted so they can further their education. This is why career colleges in California like Kaplan University and Ashford University are working with community college students, who are having trouble completing their degrees or transferring to a bachelors degree program. Stanford Instructor Seeing Success With Biology Rap Videos
Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010There are certain classes in college that can be tough for students to master, as the subject matter is very complex and hard to quickly pick up in one term. This is part of the reason why Tom McFadden, an instructor at Stanford in the Human Biology Program, started to create rap videos with some students around the subject. Most of the students just find these videos entertaining, but for a small group of people, they help learn certain aspects of Human Biology via a catchy rap song. (more…)
California Colleges Prepare for Upcoming Protests
Monday, March 1st, 2010There were a number of protests last fall throughout the University of California campuses, as thousands of people came out to show their frustration with the budget cuts and fee increases. Later this week, on March 4th, there will be even more activism as the California community colleges and Cal State campuses have joined to show their support. Not only will these protests and events happen in California, but there are similar events in a number of other states. Students are not happy with rising fees, while classes are being cut making it tougher to graduate, thus forcing them to stay at college longer and pay even more money. UC Berkeley, which is known for their political activism, already showed signs of support by throwing a party last week to promote the March 4th event. (more…)
California Community Colleges Top Focus at State Legislators Hearing
Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010A California state legislator hearing was held in Sacramento yesterday regarding the California Master Plan for Higher Education. The overall focus of the hearing was to brain storm ideas on how more students can get into college and graduate faster. One idea that came up last month in the state, was to allow California community colleges the ability to offer bachelors degrees for certain subjects. (more…)
Study Suggest Better Coordination Needed Between California Colleges
Friday, January 29th, 2010California is a very large state in terms of population, and therefore the volume of students and number of colleges can make it challenging to work as a cohesive force. There are dozens of community colleges through the state in addition to the CSU and UC system colleges, providing students with a higher education. Economic troubles and budget cutbacks over the past few years have made it tough for California colleges to stay operating at an optimal level, which has forced the three college systems to scramble, making plans to survive. Without a unifying framework there is no way for the community college, CSU, and UC systems to operate in a way that will be optimal for all schools and the students. (more…)
California State University Working to Improve Graduation Rates
Wednesday, January 27th, 2010The California State University system is currently working on plans that would raise the graduation rate by 8% over the next 6 years. Despite drastic budget cuts through the state, the CSU system looks to push forward and take control of the their students graduating. No longer will it be only the students to blame, as the CSU system looks for ways to improve graduation rates, without touching the budget. While nothing is final yet, an example given by Cal State University Chancellor Charles B. Reed was that, “There are simple things we can do, like having faculty take class attendance and if a student misses a second or third time, call or e-mail to find out why and get on it before they get so far behind, get a failing grade and give up hope”.
