The 2010 Floatopia party near UCSB was canceled this year, as county officials stopped it from happening since the student organizers did not have an event permit. Roughly 12,000 people came to Floatopia 2009, and crowds were expected to be even bigger this year which is what worried the Santa Barbara County officials. When this many people descend upon the beach at once, it causes massive devastation to the natural habitat. There are not enough bathroom facilities to accommodate the UCSB students for Floatopia, nor are there the proper security to make sure people stay safe. (more…)

USC and UCLA Pick Commencement Speakers
Friday, April 9th, 2010With the graduation ceremonies for 2010 coming up, California colleges and universities are starting to announce their commencement speakers. UCLA and USC both announced their choices this week, and the California universities have very different picks. USC decided to go with their president who is retiring this summer after 19 years, whereas UCLA picked 2003 graduate and author Gustabo Arellano. (more…)
California Community Colleges Facing Nursing Backlog
Wednesday, April 7th, 2010The California community college system is responsible for educating thousands of nursing students each year, who then work to become registered nurses in the state. Nursing programs are offered at 75 California community colleges, but all the schools are full. Many of the schools have three to four year waiting lists, or lottery systems that students are hoping will allow them to get into community college to study nursing. This education is very affordable because it is a public state college, but unfortunately there is not enough space to meet the student demand. California needs roughly 10,000 more nurses soon, as more people retire and need help or older nurses retire from the profession. (more…)
Students Still Frustrated With California College Waiting Lists
Tuesday, April 6th, 2010California colleges and universities decided to implement waiting lists this year so that they could better control the flood of students applying this year. A couple of the CSU schools like San Diego State and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo have used waiting lists for years, but now almost all of the California universities and colleges will put them to use. The budget crisis in California has really hurt UC and CSU schools, as they struggle to keep up with student demand, while dealing with limited budgets. (more…)
California Community Colleges May Raise Fees
Monday, April 5th, 2010Fees have risen across the state at colleges and universities over the last few years, and this trend may soon carry over to the community colleges in California. Currently the UC and CSU systems are still relative bargains for higher education when compared to other colleges in the country. California community colleges are also a bargain, currently costing students $26 per unit, which is quite low compared to other U.S. colleges. Recently the Legislative Analyst’s Office provided a recommendation to the Legislature to increase fees to $40 per unit. (more…)
Summer School Classes Limited for California College Students
Thursday, April 1st, 2010College students in California will have fewer options for summer school this year due to budget issues across the state. As a result various California colleges have had to reduce or cancel some of their summer school classes, which is very upsetting to students. There have been various protests in the last few months across California as college students and faculty want to see changes in education funding that will help correct the budget issues. (more…)
