Fraternities from the University of California system are frequently in the news for their good and bad activities, but lately most of the press they have been receiving has been negative. A recent party held by UC San Diego fraternity students mocked Black History Month, and many students and administrators are upset. The Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, also know as PIKE, was pointed to as the organizers of this party, but in fact it was not an official event from PIKE. There were students who were part of PIKE and other fraternities who were involved with the posting of it on Facebook. The reason why the UC San Diego administrators are so upset, is because this off-campus party was nicknamed the “Compton Cookout”, which urged attendees to “dress and act ghetto,” based upon certain stereotypes. Specifically atendees were asked to do things like wear big chains, dress in cheap clothing, have gold teeth, and speak loudly. Overall the vibe of the entire party was very negative, and was not well received by people, especially with how it related to Black History month, because it goes against core values the students should exhibit as students of UCSD.
The ripple effect of this event is already being felt, as California Assembly Speaker Karen Bass has called for an investigation into this situation. California is a very diverse state and the colleges and universities of the state do everything they can to make it a safe and open place for all students to learn. However as it stands now, this incident looks like it is not going away, and that there needs to be some change at California colleges and universities so these types of racist events do not happen in the future.

This is nothing to be excited about. It’s blown way out of proportion because someone gets butt hurt. There are parties like this everywhere. It is JUST a theme. There have been many ‘Chollo’ parties, ‘compton crookout’ parties, ‘Redneck Rally’, etc. Do you see people up in arms? No. Because it’s a fun dress up theme party. How about those dress like a ‘NERD’/'GEEK’ parties?? Stop before we end up with no freedom.

Really? It’s just a theme? I’m not sure if you can compare ‘Redneck Rally” or Nerd/Geek parties to Chollo, compton, or this type of party. It goes beyond dress up when it plays on racial stereotypes. Nerd/Geek/Redneck parties may also be offensive to some, and do play on stereotypes, but they aren’t in the same league as putting together a party that mocks an entire race, especially during an important time like Black History Month. IDK, I can see why this is a big deal and think that frats should be held to a higher standard if they are going to enjoy campus housing.
Very good blog post I love your site keep up the great posts
Hiya, nice day.. Your article is extremely impressive. I never considered that it was feasible to accomplish something like that until after I looked over your post. You certainly gave a great perception on exactly how this whole process works. I will make sure to return for more advice. Thanks
Pretty insightful post. Never thought that it was this simple after all. I had spent a good deal of my time looking for someone to explain this subject clearly and you’re the only one that ever did that. Kudos to you! Keep it up
