Advocates for the University of California are extremely upset and want to see lawmakers make education a bigger priority when it comes to the budget of the state. This unrest has led to a rally by the UC student association. A big part of the demonstration will focus on the fee hikes that continue, yet classes are being cut making it tougher to graduate on time. Over 300,000 people are on the UCforCA.org list which organizes the movement for legislators to fight for more money for education. Governor Schwarzenegger has a good plan for 2010-2011 where he is pushing to allocate more funds towards education, which is a shift in the right direction. However UC schools are still going to feel budget pains, as that plan will not be enough to get things back to where they should be.
On March 1 when the UC President, campus regents, and chancellors meet with legislators in Sacramento, the rally organized by the University of California Student Association will take place. People across the state are rallying to protest this injustice to education, which continues to charge students more for a UC education, while they cut course offerings and reduce programs such as sports. Costs for student fees are planned to be over $10,000 per year soon, based upon the increase that the UC Board of Regents approved late last year. Students and residents of California care about the future of higher education in the state and anyone with a relation to the UC system should support the cause by attending the rally in Sacramento. There is also a similar rally set to take place in late April for the CSU community college system. With the UC rally less than two weeks away it is unclear how many people will attend, but as the news spreads it is likely that the thousands will turn out to show support for the UC system.
