Last week, California State Senator Jeff Denham, R-Merced, introduced the “Student Protection Act,” at Fresno State University and UC Merced. This act would require schools in the University of California and California State University systems to have a 180-day waiting period between when a tuition or fee increase is approved, and when it goes into effect. It also looks to limit fee increases to no more than 10% per year, which would be a step to help curb the rapid increase which California colleges have experienced lately. One of the biggest complaints was around the Regents bumping up student fees by just over 30% in the middle of the school year. Raising fees and tuition is the easy way out during the rough economic conditions in California, but many residents in the state feel that the schools should figure out ways in which they can cut back. Denham stated many instances of overpaid UC presidents and administration, which he felt could be curbed to help reduce increases in fees and tuition. Passing the costs onto students seems unfair since many classes have been cut, which forces many students to go to school longer than they planned to, because they have to wait for certain classes to be offered.
Overall there were numerous instances cited in which money in the CSU or UC school systems was improperly or unnecessarily used. Blatant disregard for public money in times of economic recession is unjust and students of California should not have to bear the consequences. Hopefully 2010 will see more legislation like this to help improve the colleges in California, this will allow more students to attend and graduate so they can become contributors to the local economy.
